It is believed that when Bhagvan Bal Krishna saw annual offerings and preparation for the prayers offered to Lord Indra, he convinced the people of Gokul that as farmers and shepherds, their true ‘Dharma’ was to do farming and to protect the cattle to the best of their abilities. They were worshipping Govardhan Hill and the cows on the advice of Bhagvan Krishna. This made Indra, God of rain and thunder, angry, and the people of Gokul had to face the wrath of Indra. Lord Indra flooded the village of Gokul for seven days and seven nights. BhagvanKrishna lifted the mount Govardhan just on his small finger; and provided shelter and safety to the people, crops, and the cattle. Later, Lord Indra realised his mistake and soon apologised to Krishna. Since then, it has become a tradition to worship Govardhan. By offering 56 Bhog to Krishna.

Importance of Gujarati New Year

Gujarati New Year celebrations are a festival of wearing new clothes, visiting temples, and friends and relatives. People greet each other and exchange New Year wishes with words like  Nutan Varsha Abhinandan.

Other aspects of the celebrations include the sumptuous, beautifully decorated house and all kinds of joys and festivities in and around it. The women of the house prepare delicious sweets and snacks which are distributed among all.

New Year is considered an auspicious day in Gujarat. On this day people close their old account books and open new account books. These account books, known as Chopda, are worshiped and marked with certain auspicious symbols, followed by prayers for a profitable financial year.

To mark this day, traders close their old ledgers a day before and open new ones. They depict the holy swastika symbol and write auspicious benefits on it. On this occasion, people worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Sarasvati, the goddess of learning.

It is a day to forget the past, clear all misunderstandings, and welcome new beginnings in an auspicious way.

Rituals for Bestu Varas

Gujarati New Year is celebrated by the closure of the old chopda and the opening of the new chopda. In Gujarat, traditional account books are known as ‘Chopda’.

New Chopda is opened during Diwali Puja, in the presence of Goddess Lakshmi to seek her blessings. This ritual is known as Chopda Pujan. During this ritual, account books are marked with auspicious writings of ‘Shubh’ and ‘Labh’, meaning ‘auspicious’ and ‘benefit’, respectively. A Swastika is drawn at the beginning of the book to make the forthcoming financial year profitable.
